Thank you very much JAMES_11 !!! It worked out perfectly and the computer is now running once again. Your help is appreciated a lot. Prior to following your instructions i ran some self tests. The following error was displayed on the screen: error code 0142 message error code : 2000-01420 message : harddrive 1- self test unsuccessful. Status : 72 Does anyone know if this is a serious problem and is the computer close to termination? Can I rely on it or should I replace it? Once again thank you so much. Best regards, catinrat |

| Re: STOP ERROR: 0x00000ED (Windows XP) - please help
The error code 2000-01420 that you were getting is related to a bad hard drive and you may want to replace the hardware or backup the drive as soon as you can, so that important data doesnt gets damaged. What is the hard drive make or model that you have and whats your computer specification anyways?

It is a SAMSUNG HD161GJ. Can I be sure that this is the drive that causes the error code? Thanks for the fast reply. Other computer specification: Dell Optiplex 360 Pentium(R) Dual-core CPU E5300 @2.60 GHz 2.59 GHz, 1,98 RAM I know - old school stuff ;-) |

Regarding the last bullet: do you have any suggestions as to how I should check the hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage? |

| Re: STOP ERROR: 0x00000ED (Windows XP) - please help Well, there is no way to repair a hard drive which is giving error code : 2000-01420, and its a sign that sooner or later the hard drive will be dead anyways. Incase if it is in warranty then you can all dell people and ask them for a replacement, if not then backup important data from the hard drive or else once the hard drive becomes un-usable, you will have to spend huge amount of money for recovering the data or so. |
