HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable I am running the Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit guest with the osx 10.6.7 host. I am having some problem with this. Actually whenever any of the shared file is edited or renamed from the host then it just breaks the file and the directory from the guest just contain "???????? ???? ???". This make the file unreadable. If any new file is created from the host then there is no problem with that. Can you guess that what is the problem with this and how it ca n be fixed. Please reply if you have some idea about that. |

re: HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable Make sure that you are making use of the latest vmtools package and the VMwareTools. If you are using outdated one then that could be the reason for this so the best that you can do is to use the latest vmtools package. |

re: HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable After reading your post, I can just imagine that this is the problem with the character set. you have not mentioned that what language you normally use but there is possibility that your Virtual Machine is not having the support for that language as your host and that is the reason that that file becomes unreadable. This is the only thing that I can predict for now. See if this is the case for you or not. |

re: HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable Are you able to make the file with characters restricted to your language locally within the VM? This seems that there is some bug with the localization with the vmware tools. If this is the case then also you will get such problem. So check for this condition as well. |

re: HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable There are two vulnerabilities have been identified in various VMware products, which could be exploited locally to compromise a vulnerable system. The first issue is caused by a buffer overflow present at the folder sharing feature HGFS (Host Guest File System), which could allow a guest process and non-privileged user to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of vmx process within the host. The file sharing is disabled by default. The second vulnerability is due to an error in the VMCI feature, which could allow a guest to execute arbitrary code with privileges of the vmx process within the host. |

re: HGFS makes Ubuntu 11.04 file unreadable The file comes from hgfs.dat VMware "Shared Folder" feature and the user's profile is created, which first logs on. The file handle is not closed and it may therefore be more user profiles created. There one option to eliminate the problem and that is the use of the UPHClean 2.x Beta. |
