bootable flash drive to run chkdsk on an ntfs drive

    Hi everyone,
I recently get an hard drive failure with my Dell laptop, NTFS drive and Windows seven. Windows does not want to load. I think that I can fix that by running a chkdsk.
I have tried to create a bootable usb drive to run this command on my ntfs drive but it did not work. I have used HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool V2.0.6 for this purpose.
I was able to create a bootable usb drive that contains the chkdsk.exe file but I get an error when I ran it "cannot run in dos mode". Also I was not able to see my hard drive.
How can I create a bootable usb drive that will let me run the chkdsk command on my hard drive?

    Many thanks for your help

FYI: I have tried to run the windows repair mode, recovery console but it does not work.
I have also used the NTFS4dos tool but it does not work (windows boot on the flash drive but the screen is frozen)
I do not have a windows CD and I do not have a box to plug the hard drive to another computer.

Follow the steps that i am giving you here and let me know if that helps you or not.

    1) Download an iso file of the windows.
    2) now burn the ISO image to a CD and boot the system with he CD.
    3) reboot your system with the CD inthe CD ROM.
    4) ensure that CD is kept as a primary boot device for your PC to run.
    5) the pc will boot with the CD on, now as soon as the screen loads you will be given an option to choose R for Recovery Console. Select that.
    6) At the Recovery console C:\WINDOWS prompt, type 'chkdsk /r'.
    7) Press enter and it will keep on scanning. see if there is any kind of error coming up.

I think that it will better if you keep for yourself a proper Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and keep it around for future use if needed. It's loaded with tools of all kinds and has proven itself to be a stable and very useful addition to any "tech toolkit". It is highly suggested for and useful as well, search for it on google and download it.

    Hi,
With this tool would I see my different partition of my NTFS disk?
    - the dell recovery partition
    - the windows partition

In facts I only to access those files in order to do a manually restore of my windows.

Do you think that it's doable?

Also, I would need a windows CD to build an UBCD4Win, so would it work with a Linux version of the ultimate boot CD?
I don't think so as it said: "▫UBCD gives read/write to FAT/FATS32 and ONLY read access to NTFS (this means you can't alter any data)."

    Thanks
