why there is .DAT extension file in the OS X Lion

In the System/Library/Linguistic Data/ folder there are files with .dat extension. At present they are set to open with mpeg application. It’s not right. What should be the file association? I am using Lion on MacBook pro with Intel core 2 duo 2.2 GHz

.dat files have no detailed application that will open them. There is no standard format for the data within the .dat file. Many applications will maintain a .dat file, although that doesn't make them the accurate program.

To open those .dat files, you would require a program that can really read that specific format.I don’t have any idea which program will open .dat file

I guess what I actually require to be acquainted with is how to disassociate these particular .dat files with mpeg program stream. I am having trouble with the dictionary not opening in Pages. I think this might be the reason. It looks like I set all .dat files to open with mpeg program. I have to find out which program will open .dat files.
