Before setting up mirror partition it is necessary for you to find out which level of Raid to choose. Because without that you cannot benefit features of Raid. It will cost you an extra drive but it is safe for your data.
Raid Levels :
- RAID 0 - DATA splits between two or more disks
- RAID 1 - Creates the exact copy of DATA on another disks.
- RAID 2 - DATA is divided into number of parts and stored on different location. All disc run on the same speed under this.
- RAID 3 - This is rarely used. It uses byte-level stripping of data with an dedicated parity disk
- RAID 4 - This uses block-level striping with a dedicated parity disk
There are more higher levels of raid.
Without going in much detail I will show you the steps to enable Raid in Windows 7. This is helpful for instant backup. Just connect the additional drive to your system and follow the below procedure :
- Connect the drive and run Disk Management.
- In disk management right click on the drive on which you want to set mirror
- Click on Add Mirror
- I will ask you for an disk which will be listed in the popup box. Click on Add Mirror
- Read the warning message and give yes.
- In Disk Management after syncing you can see the second drive will be listed as Mirror partition.
- You can also create a New Mirror Volume from the same service and follow the onscreen wizard.
