how to do dual booting with CentOS and Ubuntu.

Hello everyone, I need your help for one experiment on my desktop. I am having HP pavilion A340N with CentOS 5.5 on 2 HDD. And I was planning book an order for Ubuntu, because I like it very much. I am also thinking for the dual booting between CentOS 5.5 and Ubuntu. For that reason I have looked into vmware and many other methods for the sharing of both OS. So can anyone help me with this what should I do? Every solution is highly appreciated, thanks a lot in advance.

Hey I have seen your post, as per my experience and setup at my place I can tell you that “vmware” is the best option for doing dual booting. I don’t know why it is not working for you. The other way is that, you need to use is shrink the LVM volume and associated partition to make space doe Ubuntu. But keep in my that this method can harm your data so before starting this method you must take a back up of all your data. And also you can have a look at virtual box method. First try with virtual box and if it’s not working then you can use shrink method. So choose the appropriate option for you. All the Best!

Hey guys, I have seen the above case, and I have also done the same at my place. It is working very accurately at my place the reason behind this is not the shrinking method. I am not telling that this method is wrong, this is true but it should be the last option. When I was suffering from the same I was trying to replace 30Gb memory but I was still not getting space for Ubuntu. After that I did an experiment with external HDD and I got success in it. I just made partition in HDD and installed it, it worked for me and I am also able to disconnect it with smaller HDD. So try this if possible.

            root (hd0,0)
            kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet crashkernel=128M@16M
            initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.img
    title CentOS (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5)
            root (hd0,0)
            kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet crashkernel=128M@16M
            initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.img
    title CentOS (2.6.18-194.17.4.el5)
            root (hd0,0)
            kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet crashkernel=128M@16M
            initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5.img

Re: how to do dual booting with CentOS and Ubuntu.

Hello everyone, I was quite confident about the solution from you. After reading many forums I put my question on this and I got the proper solution. I tried to apply all the logs to my system bit I was not able to dual boot with these two OS. After that I tried with external HDD, it worked for me but I was having some data related problem. then I came to know that using chain loading I can got through to my problem. I did the same and I got success. Thanks friends for the great solutions.
