    Hello everyone, hey man I have gone through to you point and error. I think you might not have installed graphical mode and it is not working directly. According to you must update your CentOS 5.4 to CentOS 5.5, I am giving you some logs, compare it with your server and do necessary changes.
    Code:
    2.6.18-164.el5 x86_64 x86_64

    centos-release-notes-5.4-4
    centos-release-5-4.el5.centos.1

    CentOS release 5.4 (Final)

    == BEGIN getenforce ==
    Disabled

    == BEGIN rpm -q yum rpm python ==
    yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos
    rpm-4.4.2.3-18.el5
    python-2.4.3-27.el5

    == BEGIN ls /etc/yum.repos.d ==
    CentOS-Base.repo
    CentOS-Media.repo

    == BEGIN cat /etc/yum.conf ==
    [main]
    cachedir=/var/cache/yum
    keepcache=0
    debuglevel=2
    logfile=/var/log/yum.log
    distroverpkg=redhat-release
    tolerant=1
    exactarch=1
    obsoletes=1
    gpgcheck=1
    plugins=1

    # Note: yum-RHN-plugin doesn't honor this.
    metadata_expire=1h

    installonly_limit = 5

    # PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
    # in /etc/yum.repos.d
