How to recover files from an Ext3 Partition

I do not know if you go here, let me know if anyone knows a program like Easy Recovery Professional which works on Windows and a similar tool I am looking for Linux. It does recover files from ext3, ext2, etc. I am having problems with my dual boot system and I am not finding solution for the same. Is there some tools that can help me to recover a file from ext3 partition. If yes then how that is possible and is there any composite tool that can also support both windows and Linux based system partitions.

Re: How to recover files from an Ext3 Partition

In most cases it much depends on the type of partition that holds the data. Ext2 partitions and solutions are quite easily found by searching the Internet. Ext3 partitions is much more complicated and have concluded that the best solution is to use one of the best tools in the world UN * X, 'grep' ;. The easiest case is when we deleted the file is a plain text file, a txt, source code, some quick notes, etc.. And we also know some portion of text that was contained in them. The way to recover is directly indicating an extract of its contents

You can try using Grep. It will search the entire partition / dev/hda3 for portions of the data. When you find the word in the text file it will add the content to the results of the lines will show on screen. Recommended that you redirect the output of grep to a file with the redirector >. You can also start immediately with the ubuntu livecd for the same. There are some utility provided in the same. You can try running testdisk which is a a free software that does this work.

There are many tools that you can try for this. You an go for programs like dd_rescue, foremost, autopsy, photorec, myrescue, recoverdm, GParted, RIP Linux, etc. There are other more long list in the same manner. But for the start if you are doing the same for first time then you can go with RIP linux. It is an lightweight Linux distribution, armed with a battery of related applications and partitions for data recovery. So this are addons that you can try on.

Re: How to recover files from an Ext3 Partition

I found R-Linux as a free tool that works from windows which is used to recover files from ext3 . R-Linux features a screen like a windows explorer tree with all the folders and files in the selected partition. Then it is as simple as dialing a tilde the objects to recover and choose a destination folder for these files and the program does the rest. This allowed me to recover the home the place where you store files and user settings. Then it was only a matter of reinstalling ubuntu and copy the recovered home folder.

I understand ERD Commander is a program for windows and this is an Ubuntu forum. Are you sure you're in the right place? The application mentioned above is to recover files from Linux partitions. If you have deleted everything and want to retrieve something from a ext3 partition I think your best option would be to recover your files from another PC or a live cd, since anything you record on that disk could walk on the information that you deleted.
