Need to gain administrator privileges on vista

My girlfriends laptop is a Dell Inspiron running win vista home. She says she was given it in standard user login.

I need to gain admin rights to uninstall software.

I see there is a password protected administrator account called "RA Media Server" no one knows who created it.
Any suggestions other than reinstalling windows?

Well the account on your girlfriend’s laptop is not created by anyone else than the Dell officials. If you purchase a laptop from dell then this account is already created on the system and in your case it might be created by the Dell Remote Access application. So now what I want you to do here is that just try and uninstall the Dell Remote Access application and then you will be easily able to delete the RA media server account. I hope it works for you.

I am not able to uninstall anything because I am not an administrator.
RA = remote access. Did not think of that.

If you are able to login via safe mode, then follow the below steps:
    1.Restart your computer
2.Press F8 before you see the Windows progress bar
3.When the boot menu appears, choose safe mode
4.If you are presented with the option to log in to the account named "Administrator", do so. Use this emergency Administrator account to fix your normal administrator account by using the user accounts control panel
