How to remove External Drive from computer if 'Safely Remove Hardware' disappears

If the Safely Remove Hardware icon disappears in Windows XP, try the following:

    • Enable the icon to be displayed in the Customise Notifications window by right clicking the Start menu, selecting Properties and going to Taskbar > Notification area > Hide inactive icons and then click on Customise.

    • When the Customise Notifications window is displayed, select Safely Remove Hardware, then select Always show or press the Restore Defaults button on the right bottom side, then search for the Safely Remove Hardware item.

Safely Remove Hardware can also be selected directly following the steps below:

    • Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager, then double-click Disk drives.

    • Double-click the Samsung External Hard Disk Drive USB Device.

    • In the Properties window under the Policies tab, check Optimise for performance and then click the Safely Remove Hardware icon

If the Safely Remove Hardware icon disappears in Windows Vista / Windows 7, update to the latest Service Pack.

Re: How to remove External Drive from computer if 'Safely Remove Hardware' disappears

There can be several other problems with the Safely Remove Hardware function. In such conditions here is what to do:
    • If the External Hard Disk Drive is not visible when clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows XP, shut down you computer before removing the USB device.

NOTE: If possible, please use the USB port of the computer instead of using a USB hub.

    • If the 'Safe to Remove Hardware' message does not appear when clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows XP, update to the latest Service Pack.

    • If even after removing the hardware, the External Hard Disk Drive does not stop operating in Windows Vista, disconnect the External Hard Disk Drive after shutting down your computer.

    • Data loss may also occur when running the Safely Remove Hardware function by right-clicking the NTFS formatted External Hard Disk Drive in Windows Explorer using Windows Vista. In such case, update to the latest Service Pack.

NOTE: If the External Hard Disk Drive is connected by the eSATA (External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment; it is an external interface for SATA technologies) interface, the device icon may not appear in the system tray.
