What are causes of data loss?

Data loss is the Damocles sword of the digital age (greek culture saying .. ). The amount of digitally stored data growing by the year - and with it the danger of losing that data. In desperate attempt to be affected by all possible means and ways to save their data yet. But even if a backup exists when you last checked whether it is really readable information? Let me tell you that I am not aware about it. Also prevention is better than cure (another saying ), so why to ask for solutions when you can prevent that thing from happening.?! I know that no-one does purposely but still you can avoid it. I am here for the same thing. Please tell me what are causes of data loss? Because after knowing the causes, I can try to avoid it (if possible).

The reasons for lost data in hard disks , removable disks or tapes can be manifold. Statistics of data recovery laboratories put here an interesting fact to light. You should know that results may vary according to the survey. Viruses are only two percent of all data loss the cause. Classic user error such as accidentally deleting files or formatting go already with 26 percent in the statistics. Often, a memory card from your camera or USB flash drives are removed from the box, even though the writes are not finished yet - classic user error with data loss as a result. The category of bugs with 9 percent, well everyone already Windows users experienced: the famous "Blue Screens" or program crashes on open files. Often file and directory structures are damaged. A faulty file system can be repaired but with certain tools, but is insufficient expertise in many cases destroyed more than saved. The lion's share of data loss with 59 percent consume hardware damage. Defects in the electronics, torn ligaments and head for hard drives crash are just some examples. The hardware damage but also consequential damages are caused by improper handling. Not infrequently, the labs get soaked with coffee or media by strong sunlight deformed media. Hardware defects can cause even further logical damage. A faulty controller electronics of a hard drive can write data to the wrong magnetic disks.

With a share of about 80 percent of all data recovery cases include hard drives are still the most common patients in the laboratory. Not change also the distortions in the labs a strong growth of solid state disks yet. The defects are divided on the hard drives on in electronic and mechanical damage. The storage capacity of modern hard disks have increased in recent years by 500 times. The reason is mainly due to the high data density and the lower platter count. Current hard drives with 500 gigabytes of magnetic discs usually involve only one or two platters. Although this reduces the number of magnetic head arms and therefore the moving parts is always greater data density, but modern media prone to malfunction. Today's storage hardware requires a much higher mechanical precision in order to accommodate the same space many times the data. This increases the probability that occurs despite elaborate quality measures a hardware failure. Due to the high density of information in a tiny space, the impact of data loss are now often more serious than before.

A defective drive electronics can have various causes. The most common failures are due to high supply voltages. This may be caused by lightning or faulty power supplies. Poor quality power supplies, the surge to pass unfiltered to the drives, can also cause damage to the components of the controller board. In addition, there are defects caused by electrostatic discharges, but usually caused by improper use of the hard disk.

To mechanical damage are defective ball bearings. Thus it may happen that the spindle motor spin up the discs can not. Episode: The high power consumption of the motor driver ICs can be overloaded on the board and result in additional defects. not turning the slices on power is high, can also be a defective motor or a flaw in the logic driving the cause. Engine failure caused by unusual turns. The motor then rotates unevenly and makes a slight whistling or squeaking strong. Bearing damage can be caused by overheating and shock effect. For notebook hard drives include above all, the latter a frequent reason defective because it mobile work situations are exposed to a higher risk of damage caused by: If a notebook on the ground so often seen on the back with. The camp of the hard drive will receive a horizontal shock, do not run more evenly and then lead to vibrations. Since the built-in mobile hard drive protection to help most do not. A further complication is that the only trapped magnetic discs (not screwed) to move there and stop turning centers for the magnetic heads so that the plates are not readable.

Head of the crash is one of about 20 percent of the most common faults in hard drives . As a head crash is defined as the breaking of the write head on the surface of the magnetic disk. It will penetrate the protective film and the magnetic layer, which is used for data storage, damaged. Hammering on the disk surface is usually the result of shocks. Classic examples are kicking against the PC or rough handling of the notebook. Due to this shock, the shock magnetic platters and arms start to swing and the write fails on the disc surface.
