Hard Drive Space

Hello,

I just bought a toshiba laptop, it was advertised as having a 500gb harddrive. When i brought it home the hard drive space was only 432gb. I called the store and the technician said that some of space that was loss is due to

1. Data loss
2. Running of the operating system
3. Recovery partition
4. Just the way the Harddisk is manufactured, he said it is never exact.

Is he correct, or is this just nonsense.. Please advise. Thanks

this sounds correct. there is often a recovery partition, so if something goes wrong, you can re-install the OS from the reco partition.

Does the recovery partition take up that much space ? The available disk space on the computer says 404gb free space out of 432 gb harddrive. So it shows 28gb of space already used, is this the space thats allocated for the recovery partition ? Just find it hard to believe that a computer that is advertised as having 500gb, can only have 404gb of free space....

From what I have heard, the capacity advertised by hard disk drive manufacturers isn’t the real drive capacity. All 500 GB models hard drive have a real capacity of 465.76 GB but as per different manufacturers there may be Hard Disk Drives Capacity Limits. You can also choose to defragment or right click on your hard drive and check the actual size limit.

yes dude he is right. by default hard disk have reserve space for these stuff. and you know due to this separate space we can recover over all data from scratch.
