Even with the Nokia N900 Linux-first true smartphone, the Finns appeared, joined Nokia is not one of the two major Linux smartphone consortia LiMo Foundation and Open Handset Alliance to, but developed in-house Maemo platform on undeterred. Maemo and Moblin bring a part of their system structure in the new mobile Linux platform MeeGo one. So much alike the basic system building MeeGo strong the current Moblin platform, while Nokia Qt graphical toolkit contributing to the well just to Maemo is introduced . Thus seem to be very active for the Maemo developer community at MeeGo only change little. In addition to MeeGo include GTK and clutter in order to more easily migrate existing applications to Moblin MeeGo can - but it is assumed that clutter MeeGo soon disappear in the long run to not have to maintain two toolkits. From the Maemo platform MeeGo also inherits the ARM processor support, so as not MeeGo Moblin only Atom netbooks, but also on Nokia's Internet Tablets With Texas Instruments OMAP processors running. Equipment manufacturers, if they wish to add support for other processor platforms - based on MeeGo is the standard Linux kernel. To have any missing drivers, the manufacturer take care of itself, however.

To the two device classes to handheld devices and netbooks meet is to get MeeGo two different according to custom user interfaces that can be supplemented by another surface - such as for Internet-enabled televisions and consumer electronics in the car. This is similar to the structure of the MeeGo quite the LiMo Platform: In both cases, an interested manufacturer to take care of the basic Linux support of its smartphones or netbooks, the body system can be downloaded free of license fees from the code pool. When the user interface, he then has the choice to make them fully as they wish, the existing surfaces easy to miss just a branding or MeeGo use standard UI.

In contrast to the LiMo Foundation, Intel and Nokia have at MeeGo however, ensured that the project and the code pool will always be free: For MeeGo, which is under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, no one asked the developers to assign their recovery rights to redistribute the code, for example, commercially available under a closed-source license to be able to. A necessity for openness, this means, however, because the choice of distribution license MeeGo developers also makes no provision. It will be interesting to see if perhaps not the LiMo Foundation MeeGo with its closed common code pool.
