I think there are different reasons for this problem but I think you should try to restart your computer in safe mode. For this while restarting keep press F8 key on your keyboard and then you will se boot screen then you have to select boot media form safe mode after completing boot process it will resolve your damages from operating system and it will work smoothly. After that you need to scan your computer with updated antivirus so it doesn’t get this type of problem again in future.

I think as you said you had facing this problem after installing windows update so I think that updates contains some malicious content like virus or spyware that is why it happens so for this you need to start your computer in safe mode and then first screen your all computer with updated antivirus. I will suggest you to get Norton security 2011 version antivirus for better security. if you are using computer and internet then its best antivirus for you.

There are some steps to solve this problem that are. Click on start then on run and enter msconfig and enter. I will give utility of Windows XP system configuration.Click on the Windows XP "Start" menu. Click "Run." Type in "msconfig" and click "OK." This will bring up the Windows XP system configuration utility.Go to the tab Boot on the Windows XP system configuration. Place a tick on the box next to No GUI Boot then select OK to exit the system configuration utility. Windows XP will popup window message to restart the computer. The system will restart with no presence of the Windows XP splash screen. Now refurbish the Windows XP splash screen by using the steps and deleting the check from the box next to No GUI Boot. By using this splash screen will restore on the next reboot.
