windows xp install just keeps formating drives

Ok I built a comp las spring everyhting was great till about a month ago. My comp just restarted itself and since then it wont boot to windows and gave me disk read errors. Well I got all my data off the hd by hookin it to my ubuntu machine. Then tried re installing vista 64 and could never get it to install and kept getting disk errors. So i tried a brand new maxtor 200gb hd and the same thing kept happening. So i sent the motherboard back to gigabyte they say they tested it and sent it back, got it today. Well same exact thing cant install vista so i try installing win xp pro on three different hard drives and after i get thro formating and copying ssystem files it does the reboot part but it keeps saying disk read error press ctrl+alt+del. I have tried it multiply times now on 3 different hard drives does anyone know what the hell is wrong with this machine.

AMD athalon II 3ghz processor
gigabyte 770TA-UD3
kingston 2gb ddr3
zotac geforce gt 240 video card
Was running Vista 64 bit

I had the same problem but I managed to solve it until i read somewhere to:

-- go into the bios and
-- activate "Load Fail-Safe Defaults"

After doing all the above steps then i just changed the cpu fsb frequency, and the boot order to CD-rom - IDE 0 etc, and left everything else alone. That fixed the problem for me, and now windows boots fine. Hope that works for you.
