If you are talking about recent games as the latest FPS, MMORPG, they are not designed to run on Linux, but you can be emulated with software, but I do not remember which. But the result is not guaranteed, despite the fact that certain works well with the linux. Actually Linux does not provide support for all the types of graphic card as well as all the technologies of the graphics due to which many games does not run on it.

Actually from the start itself Windows Operating systems have made them in such way that they have became the most friendly user interface for playing the game or doing some other works as well. Windows OS can be handles by even a small kid who just know how to play games. Due to huge demands of windows os, Game Developer tends to concentrate to make their games compatible with the Windows OS first then few of them think about making their game compatible on the Linux as well. Still if it becomes much hard work for them then they just leave it with partial support.

My son of 14 years swears by the game (unfortunately!) Too often, people stay on Windows because of games! After discovering playonlinux even my son (and daughter) want to install their games on the Linux platform. For reasons of quality of the OS, its flexibility and safety. Playonlinux but does not install that game! There may be some small handling that are good for the installation. So Windows takes the edge and gradually becomes less and less indispensable! It is not actually true! More than 406 games included with Ubuntu installable 1-click and hundreds of others that GTA San Andreas, World of Warcraft, Dofus, TrackManiaNationsForever, the SIMS 3, etc.

    Re: Gaming Experience on Linux

Linux is an operating system too often mistreated and misunderstood by critics. Used as a platform for development by major industries of special effects and 3D effect, he is shunned by many users reproaching him for his geek side and inaccessible. However it is not totally false. Gamers will tell you that Linux is good for work and surf the net, but it is not a recommended platform for computer gaming. Lack of games? Lack of diversity? Lack of quality? There are still some very good free games on Unix, you'll see some examples in this article.

Although we often do not meet the same content on a Windows game, the fact remains that most of the time, free us to forget the few shortcomings of the game in question. Let's not hide the face, the applications running on Unix are often coded by amateurs and enthusiasts who spend their free time working on it. Linux, which has a meager share of the market (less than 2%), has difficulty to get a place among the other OSes that do not encounter compatibility problems and offer much more variety of games, and more-is-better. The multiboot is a solution for gamers who have got Windows along the lightness of a Unix system, however the problem is much more complex.

    Re: Gaming Experience on Linux

Game publishers are more reluctant to bring their games to Linux and they consider it commercial suicide than to develop natively on this platform. The portage is often botched an emulation improved causing crashes and other unwanted bugs. The fact also cannot modify the code and not being able to tweak a little the game is another disadvantage for a self-respecting Linux user. But not everyone is of that opinion. The Penny Arcade game developers have a different opinion, they who had decided to develop their game as on Linux.
