    How to solve NTFS mystery

    Hello everyone, I have ubuntu 8.04. I have a problem with the mounting of volumes. Are installed automatically start the Windows XP disk, the disk of view, and a FAT32 partition on which you installed the system of the portable media center. The problem is with: usb2 external HD does not mount automatically, but I have to click on the icon in / media and mount, it is not very nice to do it every time. Sda8, that is an NTFS drive that I use as a shared data between Windows and Linux will not mount I do not understand why. To mount it I have to click, it asks me the root password and then opens. I need help to fix these problems?

    Code:
    doc @ doc-laptop: / media $ ls-l
    Total 36
    drwx ------ 2 root root 4096 05.04.2008 15:16 BLACK HOLE (USB2 external HD)
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 999 6 28/02/2008 12:57 cdrom -> cdrom0
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root 999 4096 2008 -02-28 12:57 cdrom0
    drwxrwx --- 6 root plugdev 4096 01/01/1970 01:00 sda1 (???)
    drwxrwx --- 1 root plugdev 8192 04/04/2008 19:11 sda2 (XP)
    drwxrwx --- 1 root plugdev 12288 04/04/2008 20:12 sda5 (Vista)
    drwxrwx --- 6 root plugdev 4096 01/01/1970 01:00 sda7 (???)

    The strange thing is I do not read the sda8, which would be the hard data ntfs, tells me that instead of a sda7 not display in the file manager.
    Here's my fstab:

    Code:
    # / Etc / fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file System> <mount Point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc / proc proc defaults 0 0
    # / Dev/sda6
    UUID = 772e31a0-78fb-420B-891st-ffa147bc97cd / ext3 errors = remount-ro 0 1
    # / Dev/sda1
    UUID = 07D8-0217 / media/sda1 vfat utf8, umask = 007, gid = 46 0 1
    # / Dev/sda2
    UUID = 8EB48C42B48C2EB1 / media/sda2 ntfs defaults, umask = 007, gid = 46 0 1
    # / Dev/sda5
    UUID = F4ECA7B7ECA77312 / media/sda5 ntfs defaults, umask = 007, gid = 46 0 1
    # / Dev/sda7
    UUID = 07D8-0217 / media/sda7 vfat utf8, umask = 007, gid = 46 0 1
    UUID = 2ab2169e-d5fa-47a1-9fe9-f68bf0101565 none swap sw 0 0
    / Dev/scd0 / media/cdrom0 udf, iso9660 user, noauto, exec, utf8 0 0

    Re: How to solve NTFS mystery

    As far as I know sda8 is not in fstab, so you mount it. As for the external drive it is strange.For sd8, so you have to add a line with its uuid, right? With the command ls-lah / dev / disk / by-uuid / right # / Dev/sda8 UUID = E2F82364F82335E7 / media/sda8 ntfs defaults, umask = 007, gid = 46 0 1. In dolphin sda8 see the drive as "Volume" the name will be windows I think, but it will not be mounted, and indeed the situation has worsened. If this was used first to mount the root pass. It will be better if you deny permissions because it is not required to run sudo dolphin because it's the same thing. I hope that this will help you to solve the problem that you are facing.

    According to me this will summary of your situation. The external hd usb not mount automatically. One of the ntfs drive is not mounted by itself unlike the others, you have to click twice to enter the root password and then mounts. If I add the line fstab I cannot mount it again, in any way instead. It tells you that "permission denied" for everything. Now the situation for you has deteriorated without any therapy or anything. You are not able to mount any more disks automatically and if you are tying this thing manually then it is giving permission denied error. The external HD is mounted automatically only if you are switching it on after ubuntu is running.

    Re: How to solve NTFS mystery

    Recent Users of Kubuntu 7.10, I am amazed! Because sometimes this thing really become mysterious and annoying! So here: Inexplicably, a number of files (containing videos and pictures) stored on an external hard drive USB (MEMUP 500GB) formatted to NTFS are not (plus!) accessible from D3olphin, Konqueror or Krusader others! While very Bizarrely, I plug this disk everything is in place, nothing wrong. And with that TestDisk it was able to find. This good for start, I am not familiar with system commands at the console and I do not know what to do Next. Is there any who can provide me a simple solution without including mysterious commands?
