Unable to open Remote Windows 7 Registry from Windows XP

Hello friends, On a Workgroup peer-to-peer network comprise one Dell Desktop running XP Pro Service Pack 3 and a Dell Laptop in a docking station running Windows 7 Ultimate. File shares work among the machines and can execute Remote Desktop from the XP machine onto the Windows 7 desktop. on the other hand when I run regedt32 and try to Connect Network Registry to the Windows 7 machine, I can see HKLM and HKU hives but get 'unable to open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: Error while opening key.' on attempting to open the HKLM hive. Using Remote Desktop I can verify that the Remote Registry service is running. What other information do you want? How could i open it. please help

I feel that you have to allow or enable that attribute in one of the firewall inbound rules. Or you can also try to start the remote registry service from the services.msc. Also try to disable the windows firewall service. But it would be good to discover and enable the rule in the firewall. Also try to do this, first click on to the Start menu, go to the search box and in that type services and press Enter. After it locate the Remoter registry service to check if it is disabled. If so, please start it and set the startup type to Automatic. this will help you

I recognize that you cannot open the Windows 7 registry remotely neither from XP Pro nor from the Windows 7 test. First make sure that you have got the most recent security update for the Windows 7 system. In case this problem is due to clash with certain third party software, to troubleshoot the problem, I will suggest you to prepare clean boot on the Windows 7 remotely to verify the outcome.

Try to perform the clean boot on to the system as suggested by the “Luis234”, to do it follow the steps below:
    1) First click on to the Start menu, from that go to the start search box, in the box type msconfig and then press ENTER. 2) From that go on to the tab of General from that click Selective Startup. 3) In the Selective Startup, click on to clear the Load Startup Items check box. 4) you will get the certain tabs from that Click on to the Services tab, in that click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click it to Disable All. 5) Lastly click OK and restart the system. After the machine boot, execute the installation process and verify whether the trouble is resolved.
