ubuntu 10.10 works live but does not boot after OS installation

I reside in African country. I have got a desktop system, I recently bought a disc of UBUNTU 10.10 for a Linux user and booted it live. It worked fine when booted live (except the sound ). So I installed the ubuntu O/s. After O/s installation, I am not able to boot to the O/S. A black colored screen appears on with a cursor on the top left corner that that keeps on blinking. I cannot do anything but just turn on and off the system. If anyone is aware of fixing this, please share your views

I thing the version you have downloaded is too much advanced and is not compatible with your system. Ubuntu 10.10 is the advance version or the beta version of Ubuntu 10.04. I think the graphic module or the driver is not loading that is why it is causing the blinking cursor error. You can test it whether you can load it in the console mode.

You said you see a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen, that means you are facing a Blinking cursor issue which is stopping the loader to boot to the O/s. If you have any other operating system then try to boot it from that. Suppose if you have Windows 98, try to boot from the safe mode. Undo the recent changes you made.I think once you resolve your boot issue, your sound problem will get fixed automatically.

This error can also occur when there is some USB device attached to the system.Use following steps:

    • Restart the system.
    • At the Dell Logo screen, press the <F2> key to enter the System Setup.
    • Press the <Down Arrow> key to highlight Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options), then press the <Enter> key.
    • A small box with a list of devices appears in the middle of the screen. Press the <Down Arrow> key to highlight USB Emulation. (The default setting is On.)
    • Press the Space Bar on your keyboard to change the setting to No Boot.
    • Press the <Esc> key.
    • Press the <Esc> key. (A small box with list of options appears in the middle of the screen.)
    • Ensure that Save Changes and Exit is highlighted in blue.
    • Press the <Enter> key, and the system will restart.
