The first version designed for workstations using IA -64 Itanium processor has been placed on the market in 2001 , Microsoft has consolidated in 2003 ( hence the kernel of Windows Server 2003 and adding support among other Itanium 2 processor ) to finally abandon the beginning of January 2005 [ 2] no great surprise to a market of a small number of workstations equipped with Itanium processor , positioned " upscale "and running mostly on Linux .

Microsoft decided early stage , to guide its policy on 64-bit operating systems of benefit to businesses than to individuals, the technology being only marginal. Also , Windows XP Pro x64 can not buy that OEM license.

To ensure the implementation of 32-bit programs , Windows XP 64 is capable of emulating a 32 bit processor . However migration is certainly not easy , and some 32-bit applications may encounter some compatibility problems with Windows XP 64. Windows XP 64 uses a technology called WOW64 ( Windows on Windows 64) to allow it to run 32-bit applications using the IA32 instruction set . This, through DLL Wow64.dll , and Wow64win.dll Wow64cpu.dll.
