A firewall system does of course not absolute security, quite the contrary. Firewalls offer protection to the extent that all communications to the outside going systematically through them and they are properly configured. Thus, access to the external network by bypassing the firewall are as many security flaws. This is particularly true of connections made from the internal network using a modem or any means of connection beyond the control of the firewall.

Unlike many firewall, ZoneAlarm has long been known to provide effective monitoring of incoming and outgoing connections for personal computers. A hacker may attempt to access a number of ways to a PC connected to the Internet via an attachment, a link included in a fraudulent email, or via a network service is automatically installed with the system. Zone Alarm prevents such intrusions by filtering and reporting suspicious communications.
