A virtual machine is like a machine, access to the shared directory is as between two physical PC. If you do not want to go through a network share, the doc looks virtualbox Section Folder Sharing "(should be the guest additions), which provides access to a directory on the host without going through the network. For the USB key, tuas which version of virtualbox? because the open source version (OSE) does not support USB. Otherwise, in the settings of your virtual machine.

Your shares created by the guest additions will be visible: "My Networking Places" -> "Entire Network" -> "VirtualBox Shared Folders". It created a network share, but without requiring a network, that is the goal of "shared folders" of guest additions. The type of network you have (NAT / bridged etc ..) has no influence on this feature.

In your network config (your host system eh, not in VirtualBox), you have a network card "VirtualBox Host-Only Network". It has the IP address 192.168.56.1 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (do not try to change these values via the standard interface of the network config of Windows, do it via VirtualBox otherwise changes will risk be lost at next startup, in addition to walking on two at once).

In your virtual machine, network config, the network adapter supposed to be connected to the virtual network VirtualBox, for your sharing guest / host: Give him a valid IP address, for example 192.168.56.103, and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. You can also add a second network card for Internet access: the access mode network can be NAT, you can give him an IP address automatically in (if you put a DHCP network VirtualBox, seen the beginning).

In VirtualBox, the "Preferences" of your virtual machine => "Network" => 4 tabs you can climb to four virtual network cards.
    Go for the first:
    - Enable the network card (the box)
    - Card Type: eg PCnet-FastIII (it goes without worries in a virtualized Windows XP, if you are worried, take another card)
    - New Network Access: Private access host
    - Name: You should see the name of this virtual network adapter on your physical machine (what we've seen a little higher): "VirtualBox Host-Only Network.
