The time taken by the system until the login depends on many factors: the loading of drivers, services, tasks, etc. .. If the time is really long, the system seems to stop for too many seconds or minutes before the hard drive gets back to work , i think you should conduct a comprehensive audit system drives or containing files used by the system (see audit records ). After analysis, perform a defragmentation (Drive Properties / Tools / Defragment Now).

Check the Event Viewer (Windows + R - enter eventvwr). In industries and Application System, double-click on entries as reported as warning or error at the start of the computer. Detailed information can provide valuable information on the hardware, driver, task or service that could explain the slowdown. If Lair does not provide a solution for the error detected and the content is obscure or incomprehensible, post a message on the Microsoft newsgroups with an explanation of the problem and copy and paste the details of the error. Specialists will doubtless find a solution.

The connection interface installs AOL Wan Network Driver that can slow by nearly 30 seconds on boot. The usefulness of this driver is not shown because its absence does not interfere with connections (Caution: the final version of this interface, the seven currently control this driver is active). Deactivation is as follows:
    • Open System Properties by right clicking on My Computer, choose Manage (or Windows + Pause) and then click the Hardware tab - Device Manager button (or more directly Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc).
    • Activate the menu command View / Show Hidden Devices.
    • Click the right mouse button on the entry Wan Network Driver and select Disable. There is no need to remove this device because the AOL interface to resettle in the next start.

Check the settings of system startup: Reduced time to display the boot menu or disable if XP is the only system installed. The time changes in the console in System Properties (Windows + Break) - Advanced tab - Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section. Uncheck the option Show the list of operating systems during or change the number of seconds. In the same box, click the Modify button and verify that, under the [Operating system], the / Fastdetect at the end of the line for Windows XP.

Example: multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" / fastdetect)

    Re: Windows XP slow shutdown

Hi, if you have recently done a repair or re-install using the original install disk, then even if you have re-installed SP3 you have probably re-installed an old version of Internet Explorer, probably IE6. This affects the shutdown speed. Try downloading and installing IE8 from MS and see if that makes a difference.

All these tips about changing registry settings to improve the shutdown time are smoke and mirrors. Don't you think that MS know what settings to use for correct operation of their software?
