Maintaining an Active Directory is a very important administrative task should be scheduled regularly to ensure that in case of disaster, you can recover your data lost or damaged and can repair the database in Active Directory. The above situation clearly indicates that you have not maintained the servers properly and hence you need extensible Storage Engine (ESE) is the database of Active Directory, to manage all objects in the Active Directory database Active Directory.

If the Users and Computers Active Directory is installed on a computer without Exchange or without the Exchange management tools installed, you can not perform Exchange tasks from that computer.

Users and Computers Active Directory can be started from an Exchange server or from a workstation that has Administration Tools installed Exchange System. Any modification of the data affects the performance of the database, the fragmentation of the database and data integrity.

Hi Calvin, thank you for the reply. I failed to mention this is a brand new Server (2008) in which we are retiring our 2003 box. Prior to the migration, the environment has been rock solid.

Any constructive ideas/solutions/thoughts are always welcome.

Kind Regards

Hello i would advice you to create some registry file which i have listed below and then you need import the registry files into the DC registry which is not working. This should resolve the whole issue and if it doesn't then try the regtlib.exe for registering the activeds.tlb

Windows Registry Editor
Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}\1.0]
@="Active DS Type Library"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}\1.0\0]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}\1.0\0\win32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\activeds.tlb"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}\1.0\FLAGS]
@="0"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{97d25db0-0363-11cf-abc4-
02608c9e7553}\1.0\HELPDIR]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32"

Re: Unable to open active directory in windows server 2008

you can open the active directory by two ways i have mentioned the procedures below:

Go to the Start, and select Run.
Now in the run box, type dsa.msc, and then click OK.

Or

Click Start, point to Programs, Microsoft Exchange and click Users and Computers Active Directory.

To manage the disks on Windows Server 2003, use the Management Console the computer and Disk Management extension located under Storage. You can also create your own console by adding the software component Disk Management. You can also manage disks any computer remotely, choosing the option Connect to another computer or by creating a console Custom pointing computers to manage, provided part of Group administrators or server operators.
