If you are working o windows and need to know about this terms then the concept would be different from other operating system but in case if you are huge user of Linux and always wanted to the same in Linux then it would be something different form the windows implementation ...And also you have to follow the different steps for every procedure ...

If you are working in windows environment then you need to follow the below suggested steps. Before continue in the procedure, you need to download hashcalc from the appropriate location which is freely available on the net.

  • Open hashcalc
  • Uncheck all the the tagged checkboxes except md5
  • Change data format to file in the data box at the right hand side is a button with 3 dots in click it now expand to where you downloaded your .iso or .zip and choose it and click open
  • Now press calculate after a few seconds (or more based on your machine speed) there will be a string next to the md5
  • Now compare that to the md5 hash on the download page

If they are the same then your iso or zip is ok, if not the you require to download it again and the hash should be:

Name:: bt4-final.iso
Size: 1570 MB
MD5: af139d2a085978618dc53cabc67b9269

Name:: bt4-final-vm.zip
Size: 2000 MB
MD5: 733b47fad1d56d31bc63c16b3706a11c

How to find out if your iso is or isn't corrupt by md5 checking

Hello dude !

If you placed on the linux machine and need to implement the same procedure then you have to go through the suggestions below. Just be sure that .iso or zip is somewhere simple to expand to eg \root

Open a console Window and expand to that directory and type

md5sum <name of file>

After some time (seconds), you will get a response and the hash should be:

Name:: bt4-final.iso
Size: 1570 MB
MD5: af139d2a085978618dc53cabc67b9269

Name:: bt4-final-vm.zip
Size: 2000 MB
MD5: 733b47fad1d56d31bc63c16b3706a11c

As long as this is the same as the hash should be, you are better to move. Between these steps will work for any file that you require to check the md5 for.

How to find out if your iso is or isn't corrupt by md5 checking

Hi Dr. V & devasis ,

I have also some ideas that comes into my mind after getting your post. I read the post very carefully and got some more effective things and I am really glad to have this for me. The ideas after some discussions with my friends . I would just add that md5sum also work on OS X, just open Terminal, type md5sum and drag and drop the file to the terminal windows.

Thanks again

I have to suggest a great alternative that I have used for a while called HashTab. It integrates into the windows shell and joined a new "File Hashes" tab to every files' Properties window.

You can customize which hashes it will generate, and it supports Adler32, CRC32, HAVAL, MD2, MD4, MD5, RIPEMD-128, RIPEMD-256, RIPEMD-320, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, Tiger, and Whirlpool hashing. It is vbery good and frequent and it consume about 10 seconds to generate entire hashes for the BackTrack ISO.
