Help- How to demote domain controllers windows server 2003

    Hi everyone,

I have Three windows server 2003 with DNS and active directory installed on them. I closed two of the domain controllers from the network and i realised that all servers using the domain could not connect and services were not running. On checking the only domain server that was on, i realised that in the dns the forward lookup zone region was empty, also i tried a few troubleshooting commands and got the error dns cannot connect to active directory.

Can anyone advice me on how to demote the other two domains so that i have just one computer with missing forward zone as my domain controller? I will like to take off the other two servers from the network for a few months.

    kind regards

You can configure Active Directory-integrated zones for secure dynamic updates so that only authorized users can make changes to a zone or to a record.

DNS updates can be sent for any one of the following reasons or events:
    • An IP address is added, removed, or modified in the TCP/IP properties configuration for any one of the installed network connections.
    • An IP address lease changes or renews any one of the installed network connections with the DHCP server. For example, this update occurs when the computer is started or when you use the ipconfig /renew command.
    • You use the ipconfig /registerdns command to manually force an update of the client name registration in DNS.
    • The computer is turned on.
    • A member server is promoted to a domain controller.
