It is possible to render AGP support in Linux. That is possible by installing agpart kernel module on the Linux Kernel. It is not a part or comes with the ATI display driver. It is a additional component which is distributed from the Linux side. For this you will have to look on the official site of your motherboard and look for the Linux based support for the same.

There are many Linux distribution which comes with the AGP support in them. For that you does no need to add any other additional kernel module. The version which comes with the same is SuSue Ver 7.0 and RedHat Ver 7.0. If you have any of this version of Linux on your system then you does need to add up the agpart additionally on your PC.

The agpart module is very necessary for Linux systems to run the AGP support. The main role of this kernel module is that it detects the presence of AGP/GART module in your Linux based PC and tries to connect with that. If you want to use a 2D application and not going to run 3D application then you does not necessarily need this for your Linux PC.

Yes that is right that if you can disabled that or does not necessarily need this if you are going to work on 2D application. In order to check first that this kernel module is either available or not you can run Ismod as root in your systen. As the working of XServer where the connection is established the usage count for the kernel module goes to greater than 0.

Re: How to Enable AGP support on Linux

Today's ATI's Linux based drivers are equipped with the AGP. You does not need to add any of the extra kernel module from outside and that works with ease. Many times some users does not have the AGP support so in that case this built in module is going to load the AGP driver. But this not guaranteed that this will definitely work in all type of systems.
