Watch dvds on ubuntu

I have ubuntu 9 installed on my laptop and i'm using Totem Movie Player however I can't watch any of my DVD's. It gives me error whenever u try to watch any DVD files of .WMV and MPEG format. Please tell me which package to install to make it work.

To play DVDs in smplayer/mplayer only have to install libdvdcss2, It is run-time libraries to allow applications to access some of the more advanced features of the DVD format. You can install the full pakage of Medibuntu. Examples of software in Medibuntu: Acrobat Reader, non-free codecs, Google earth, RealPlayer.

hello I google to do with the commands needed to install what you told me to install and am wondering which will be correct, the most curious is that if I give another player first and close and then open smplayer going well.

If you've already added the medibuntu repository, you can install with sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 And if not get off the deb package and install it manually sudo dpkg-i package_file.deb

What gives you the smplayer error when trying to play the DVD without opening another player first?

Hi,

I always see the dvd's using vlc and it works very well, look, my steps are these:

sudo aptitude install vlc
sudo aptitude install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

And it works very well, insert a DVD, and when asked which program to launch the DVD, you say that with vlc and you will work. Also one thing, though it seems silly, after installing it said above, restart your computer.
