Installing NVIDIA on Linux

I installed the Linux operating system and much like to play the gamed on Linux operating system because my brother is needed the Linux OS for his practice on the Linux tutorials and I can also play the games.To play the big and heavy configured games,I need to install the NVIDIA graphics driver on my PC but I am little aware about the installation.So as newbie I would like to know about the installation procedures for NVIDIA on LINUX

Installation prerequisites :

The installation requires some prerequisites to install the graphics driver.The computer system contains one or more slots specially for the Graphics drivers.
Just adjust the video card and ready to install the driver for the connected video card.

The drivers are available for different platform.Just download them and Install with the prior platform.You can Download the NVIDIA graphics drivers.

Configuring Installation for NVIDIA :

The NVIDIA would be installed in this way.I am going to configure the installation procedure :

1- Just make sure that the kernel-sources, gcc and make packages is installed in the system or not.
2- Download the above suggested link in the reply.
3- Move to the runlevel 3 in GUI environment which can achieved different ways:

• The CTRL+ALT+F1 or F2-F6 to logging in as a root user and writing init 3.
• The writing a 3 at the GRUB boot prompt.

4-Enter in the system as a root user, if you aren't logged in before.

The further step,would be as follows:

• Find the driver that you have just downloaded or you have earlier and execute the command :
  # sh NVIDIA-1.0.8174.run
  
• If it pop up with an prevention error regarding rivafb support then leave it.
  
• As a root user,the next step would be as like and type
  # modprobe nvidia
  
• Before configure the file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf ,a shot screen of statement related to graphics driver is as follows:
  
  

  Section "Device"
     Identifier  "Nvidia Geforce 2"
     Driver      "nv"

• Change the code section with the "nv" line to "nvidia" and save the files.
  
• Log out from the root user and logging as a normal user,Type
  $ startx

Now,if you got the logo of NVIDIA and startx windows environment is going successful then NVIDIA installation is successful.

Editing your /etc/inittab

Sometimes,The distributor allows to edit your /etc/inittab file in non-GUI mode.To make sure,the installation of graphics driver.So you need to follow the given instructions:

1. Log in as root user and use the command given below:
$ su root
and you would be prompted for password,enter the administrator password .

2. Open the file /etc/inittab file in text editor and type the PICO command associated with the file name :

# pico /etc/inittab

3. Search the statement in the file,like this :

id:5:initdefault

4. Change the value from 5 to 3

Now Save the file and reboot your computer system.
