    Computer stops at "Windows is shutting down"

    Hello,

    I am currently working on a computer with Windows XP SP3. Whether in normal mode or safe mode, when I restart the computer, it stays for 30-40 seconds at the screen "Windows is shutting down" and then managed to restart or shut down. Meanwhile, I see that the hard work is based.

    Do you have any suggestions for reducing the closing time? Does anyone know what the computer is doing when it shows "Windows is shutting down"?

    Thank you for your help.

    Try to improve the shutdown time by doing this:

    1. A complete Windows Update.
    2. Use RegCompact Pro 2.6.7 to compact the Windows registry.
    3. Use CCleaner to clean Windows and Registry.
    4. Update the drivers for the video card, sound card, network card.

    Save the following quote text in one notepad file and save it with .reg extension.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "AutoEndTasks"="1"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "HungAppTimeout"="2500"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "WaitToKillAppTimeout"="2500"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
    "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="2500"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management]
    "ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000000
    -1) Closes the Windows Apps - default = 20s
    -2) Closes the windows Services - default = 20s
    -3) Empty the Windows Swap - = indeterminate time depends on the size of the swap

    Re: Computer stops at "Windows is shutting down"

    Its happening may be because some process is hanging up while shutting down your pc, do the following to allow Windows XP to close non-responsive applications automatically upon shutdown:
    1. Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop'
    2. Highlight the value 'AutoEndTasks.'
    3. Change the value to '1'

    Now you XP will able to close hand applications during the shutdown process.

    To do so, click the Start button -> Run -> and type regedit.exe. Browse this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control
    Click on Control folder and in key "WaitToKillServiceTimeout",set it to 200 by double click that key.
