Desktop Shortcuts Disappear in Windows 7

I have a good setup and Windows 7 runs pretty fine on it without any issues. It is setup on a SBS 2003 server network and the problem is everytime when I log in, all the shortcuts that point to network server gets disappeared. I think that the shortcut is getting deleted due to some break in the network link ot so and to be precise, even the shortcuts cannot be found in the recycle bin. Can anyone tell me any solution for desktop Shortcuts getting disappeared in Windows 7? Thank you.

I think this problem arises due to some scheduled tasks that helps you to clear the shortcuts and also as desktop cleanup utility is not there in Windows 7, therefore it is cause by some other third party softwares. In any caes you can try to enable object auditing for the Desktop folder by following the below method:

    1. First click on Start, enter GPedit.msc in the Start Search box.
    2. Then open the following branch.

    Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Security

    3. Enable the following policies:

    Audit account logon events
    Audit object access

    4. Open Windows Explorer, open the folder C:\Users\[username].
    5. Right click the folder “Desktop”, choose Properties->Security. Click the Advanced button.
    6. Click the Auditing tab. Click Continue.
    7. Click Add. Then click Advanced.
    8. Click the button Find Now.
    9. Wait for the process finishes. Then from the users list add the following users.

    ANONYMOUS LOGON
    BATCH
    CREATOR OWNER
    Everyone
    Guests
    LOCAL SERVICE
    NETWORK
    NETWORK SERVICE
    SERVICE
    SYSTEM

    10. After selecting each user, choose “Delete” and “Delete subfolders and files” as the auditing entries.

I bet that it most likely came from a scheduled task:

Taskmanager >> Task Scheduler Library >> Microsoft >> Windows >> Diagnosis a task called "Scheduled"... which I disabled for the time being.

    The description:
"The Windows Scheduled Maintenance Task performs periodic maintenance of the computer system by fixing problems automatically or reporting them through the Action Center."

You can try to the following to solve this issue:

First click on Start Menu > then Control Panel > go to System and Security > Administrative Tools (near bottom) > Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler (Local) (upper left) > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnosis >

(right pane) Right click on Scheduled > Disabled

If this is enabled then all desktop shortcuts to external drives like card readers, usb drives, CD/DVD drive and also control panel items as well will be deleted by Windows 7.
