"Directory Services cannot start" error message

    Hello,

On a windows 2000 sp2 DC, after reboot the server (done via terminal
service) I get the following message:

lsass.exe System Error, security accounts manager initialization failed
Because of the following error: Directory Service can not start. Error
    status 0xc00002e1
Please click ok to shutdown and reboot into directory services restore mode
I then have no choice but to reboot, and reboot loop never ends.

I do not have a backup of system state (the problem occurred
few hours after the dcpromo) but there is another DC in the domain (works well).

Thank you in advance for any help,

Of course, restoration or backup resynch from another DC. Follow this MIcrosoft Knowledge base article "Directory Services cannot start" error message and from the bios menu start the Directory Services Restore Mode and follow all advise using ntdsutil.exe (in recovery mode Active Directory). And also refer to this help How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain controller demotion .

In this issue you must be able to perform a system state restore:

    1. First replace the failed drive and give it the same drive letter as before.
    2. Boot into DSRM mode
    3. Perform a system state restore, and reboot.

All being well you should be good to go

The main reason can be due to driver letter is not available or its changes. This can be because of AD database which might be spread out over multiple drive letters and Windows has not assigned the drive letter to the partition before it's actually needed. If you are using Image for either DOS or Windows to recover the partitions on new drive, you must first restore each partition to the same location on the new hard drive using the command line interface.Your first command line restore must include the /CR option which will delete all existing partitions on the drive.
