The Home version of Windows Seven, ie one that is unfortunately the most sold, you can not use XP mode functionality ... Another imperative for configuration, it must necessarily have the Intel side of an Intel VT-x (Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Corei5 Core i7 ...) with the virtualization technology. The double heart and Quad are more obviously. AMD's side must have the technology AMD-V is present on every CPU socket AM2 Sempron except (so the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, Opteron, Phenom I and II). The complete list of CPUs with this technology is available here.

For the performance of Windows XP in Windows Virtual PC must have a minimum of one GB of RAM with 512 MB will be dedicated to the virtual machine. It goes without saying that if you intend to run demanding applications, you will see it all up (between 2 and 4 GB). An installation based on Windows 7 in x64 which manages in excess of 3 GB of RAM can be used well here. According to Microsoft, you will need about 15GB of disk space for each virtual environment to be comfortable. In practice, an installation of the OS alone does not exceed 1 GB

Re: Windows 7 : Compatibility requirements for installing XP mode

Windows 7 can run Windows XP in virtual mode, with its Virtual PC Windows tool. This means, simply, it is possible to execute one or more instances of the old operating system from Microsoft, either windowed or full screen on Seven and exploit naturally, without change your habits.

If you occasionally need Windows XP or an application that will run under this OS, there is no need to use a full install with all that that implies (partitioning, multiboot). With the Windows Virtual PC and XP mode, you get the OS in the OS without cluttering up your current configuration and without disrupting the smooth operation of your host system.

The virtualization of Windows XP is mainly useful for small and medium enterprises, but also for professionals who require specific applications can run even on Windows XP and waiting for portability in Seven. You have here a Windows XP completely independently on which you will perform all common tasks, adding programs (office, anti-virus ...), the system updates, install antivirus software ... The programs installed in your virtual OS are also directly executable from the Start menu of Windows 7 in a mode called transparent. Indeed, the application will run directly on Seven as any application, except that it will actually run Windows XP on a completely transparent and invisible.

Re: Windows 7 : Compatibility requirements for installing XP mode

Windows 7 based on the same kernel as Vista had faced with the same difficulties with the very old applications and not updated. To solve the problem, particularly where critical company information system always tends to keep some old active development, Microsoft has introduced the XP mode. It is a virtualization tool like Virtual PC, VirtualBox or VMWare. But in XP mode, it is not necessary to display the Office XP in a window. Windows applications running on virtualized XP appear directly on the desktop Windows 7 as if it were a normal application. Novice users are thus less disturbed and have the impression of being confronted with a dual environment.

The XP mode is not available on all machines. It takes at least 2 GB of RAM to run. But it is primarily a processor with technology "Hardware Virtualization". This technology first name is "VT" and Intel "AMD-V AMD.

You need a high-end Windows edition and hardware VT.

Here's a Microsoft tool that will tell you if you can run XP Mode.

If you can't, you can always opt for Zinstall (like XP Mode, and also migrates you from XP to 7 automatically). It works on every Windows / hardware, thought it is not free like XP Mode.
