Try the following steps, to resolve your problem with Preserve Users and Network Settings :

    1. Verify that the Mac has AC power without interruption.
    2. For faster installation, Time Capsule / AirDisk users must connect their computers directly to the airport to your device via Ethernet.
    3. Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and restart while holding down the "C".
    4. On the screen "Welcome", go to the menu "Utilities" and select "Restore from backup system ...".
    5. The "System Restore" window reminds you that this procedure will erase all data on your Mac's internal hard disk. Click "Continue".
    6. In "Select a backup source" choose your backup disk for Time Machine and click "Continue". (If the backup disk you are restoring from a network drive, click "Connect to Remote Disk." Then choose the disk image of the restoration will be developed and click "Continue").
    7. Under "Select a backup" choice of what set of backups that would like to "Restore" in the dropdown menu. (If the backup unit has only one game, it will be dimmed.)
    8. Then, highlight the date and Mac OS X version from which to restore.
    9. Click "Continue".
    10. In "Select a destination" select the Mac hard disk "inside. Dar installation time, while it calculates the space needed for restoration. When ready, click" Restore ".
    11. Confirm your desire to erase the disk by clicking "Continue".

If a version of Mac OS X is already installed and you want to preserve your files and applications, as well as various settings and preferences, choose "Archive and Install" and check "Preserve Users and Network Settings". The only advantage of the "Upgrade" is any folder named "Previous System" or "Old System" will be created, this could be useful in case of lack of space on the hard drive, but the problems by users are such that this option should be avoided as much as possible.

Generally, it is best to reinstall third-party software after installation of Archive and Install to make sure they work properly. The option "Preserve Users and Network Settings" leaves intact the software that are not published by Apple (third), although they may be transferred, depending on their location.

You may rightly ask what you should do the Previous System folder. It may contain elements you need. To find out, once you've finished configuring, installing and updating your applications, compare the previous system the new. If certain elements are present in the Previous System folder but not in the new System folder, copy them or reinstall them. If you do not know exactly what some items (and if you do not need it), leave them in the Previous System folder. When you feel you have recovered everything you need in the Previous System folder, you can delete (or leave it if you have enough disk space). You can not start your computer using the Previous System folder, but settings, preference files, fonts, add-ons and other items remain available if you need to access them.
