Different startup modes of Windows XP

    Hi,
Can anyone post a shot description of different startup modes in Windows XP. When you press F8 at the boot time of Windows we can see a Menu. This menu shows up Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and other options to trouble shoot Windows. I am familiar with Safe Mode but still need a short description of everything mentioned on the screen. Thanks in advance.

When you press F8 at the boot time the first option which appear is Safe Mode. Once it is selected then Windows starts by loading a minimum of services, keeping an SVGA resolution, and without launching the TSRs. This helps Windows to load with minimum needed files and so the user can take out the data or work on any other thing. The second one is Safe mode with networking. Here Windows starts by loading a minimum of services, keeping an SVGA resolution, without launching the TSRs, but by activating the network management.

There are much more options available when you want to troubleshoot windows. First on two options are common. The other one is Command prompt with safe mode. It's safe mode without launching the GUI. Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del displays the Task Manager under this option. So that you can check the files and see the services. The other one which states Enter startup events in the log. Here Windows starts normally, recording the steps reading the file c: \ ntbtlog.txt.

There are more options other than what mentioned above. One from it is enable VGA Mode. When this option is selected Windows starts in VGA mode. After that comes last Known Good Configuration where Windows starts up with the latest version of the registry that has not been a problem. Then the last among them is Debug mode which allows Windows to send debug information to another computer. This feature is reserved for professional users.
