Re: Many "-dev" packages for installing

I found this in debian's quick reference manual :

Code:
# dselect update # always do this before upgrade
# dselect select # select packages in "suggests" and "recommends"
# dselect install

Re: Many "-dev" packages for installing

Have a look at the available tools :

dselect --- menu-driven package management tool (top level)
dpkg --- install package (package-file centric)
apt-get --- install package (package-archive centric, CLI APT)
tasksel --- install task (a set of packages)
aptitude --- install package (package & task, ncurses APT)
deity --- alternative ncurses APT
synaptic, gsynaptic --- GUI APT alternatives

Re: Many "-dev" packages for installing

I think you will need these too for easy operations :

apt-cache - check package archive in local cache
dpkg-reconfigure - reconfigure an already installed package
dpkg-source - manage source package file
dpkg-buildpackage - automate the building of a package file
