    Use old home parition for new Linux Partition

    Hello friends, I have a linux box with Mint Linux, I want to install ubuntu now. My question is can i use the old /home partition for new ubuntu linux. Do i need to format or will i be able to use it as it is to that i can regain the data... Please help... I want to know if i can Use old home parition for new Linux

    Yes, you can use the old /home partition in the new linux but, you won't be able to retain your data in there. Its better to take a backup, as Setup will format the partition. Also you have to select manual partition type and then select the home partition manually by assigning it /home mount point.

    While Ubuntu setup starts, select manual partition and not guided partition or the largest continuous one too. Then edit your existing home partition and select the mount point as /home and see if you can do it without formatting. If it goes well, you have your data, but be on the safer side and take a backup...

    Thanks for your advice will take a backup first. Also i will try if it works without formatting, as far as i know swap partition can be common between multiple number of linux OS, i am trying a way to share the /home partition so that whichever linux i open, i can get access to files which i open and edit frequently...
