Re: How to take backup of Active Directory

Backing up Active Directory is essential to maintain an Active Directory database, Windows 2000 Active Directory data store, the actual database file, is %SystemRoot%\ntds\NTDS.DIT. Active Directory is backed up as part of system state, a collection of system components that depend on each other. You can backup Active Directory by using the NTBACKUP tool that comes built-in with Windows Server 2003, or use any 3rd-party tool that supports this feature.

Re: How to take backup of Active Directory

The backup tool in Windows 2000 Server supports multiple types of backup: normal, copy, incremental, differential, and daily. The ntds.dit file is the heart of Active Directory including user accounts. The size of ntds.dit will often be different sizes across the domain controllers in a domain. However, because Active Directory is backed up as part of system state, the only type of backup available for Active Directory is normal.

W2K backup allow to back up Active Directory while online. Back up the Active Directory using Windows 2000 Backup. You can access from Start menu button > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup. Active Directory system state data does not contain Active Directory unless the server, on which you are backing up the system state data, is a domain controller. Active Directory is present only on domain controllers.
