Need some information on Midori OS

    Hi,
Anyone is familiar with Midori. I had received a project work on the same. I need a basic information on this. It is some kind of operating system which is developed by Microsoft. What features & services does this includes. And on what basis it is used for. Where can I download this. And does it works only on Windows or it supports cross platform like Linux, Mac, etc. Thanks in advance.

It is a type of a browser plus other support. I am familiar with the Midori browser. It is actually a lite web browser tool. The main features is it has a full support for GTK + 2, it has a full fast rendering Webkit, it shows up table, windows and other session management tools. It is also flexible with configuration with web search. It also supports user scripts. It also has customizable menus. It is available for free use from the official site.

Midori stand for managed code operating system. It is created by Microsoft Research. It is provided for a commercial use and it is also called as Singularity OS. It is highly dependable operating system which kernel, device driver and other application support. You can also run more applications from multiple places. It also has a security model which is quiet useful.

Midori is a operating system which relies entirely on the Web and integrate better with all the possibilities offered by the Network. Midori, according to the intentions, it would be based on a two-tier system of kernels: the first, a microkernel, will manage the hardware, how threads are managed a multi-core CPUs and all the administration part and management of resources and consumption. The second will be instead on the management of applications and operating system features.

Re: Need some information on Midori OS

Very little is know about Midori - it is still under development . Development started around 2006.

It is not compatible with any existing operating system including Windows . It will not run any native apps( c /C++) so no Unix ports. The only applications supported are "Managed" garbage collected eg Java/C#/Python/Java script /Ruby etc. Device drivers will also be managed so a new set of drivers will be needed.

It is internet aware so will run services / clients faster and more secure . If you need details its based on Singularity which you can download ( SIng was written between 2002 and 2006) . Its worth noting the paper "Rethinking the Software Stack"

It it does not relly on Hardware protection by the Operating SYstem (or even Paging) . It relies on verifying safety by running strongly typed code ( CIL) which is verified for correctness at compile time. Note the OS will compile code from CIL at install ( and possibly JIT) time into native x86 - no need for sand boxes etc.

Obviously its a huge risk why do it ? Probably 10% better performance than Linux ( significantly more on multi core) and 1/10th the security and reliability issues of existing applications. It will also make maintaining/changing the OS much cheaper and easier and reduce previous and future bloat by a significant margin ( due to a single large runtime/API) .

It is likely to make a first appearance in Microsoft's Cloud Severs (Azure) and Windows Mobile 8 ( or7) - note these 2 are likely as there is fewer backward compatability risks. Replacing Windows may follow but its a huge risk and if we see it it will be like Windows NT with the existing windows taking a lower priced Windows 98 style desktop roll .
