    FAT32 file size limit

I'm running Windows Xp as my operating system. I would like to know that what is the maximum file size limit for fat32? I had tried to copy a 4gb file to a fat32 drive, but it pukes. I suspect it is a file size limit. So, can any body provide me the correct information on fat32 file size limit? Any kind of information would b greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

    Re: FAT32 file size limit

FAT32 is the file system used in older MS-DOS and Windows systems. There are some limitations in the FAT 32 file system. The maximum size of a volume depends on the file system used to format the volume. Windows 2000 allows you to format volumes with three different file systems: NTFS, FAT16, and FAT32. Fat 32 has in inherent limit to the maximum size of any file you load to a disk which is 4 GB. FAT16 can support a maximum of 65,535 clusters per volume. Table 3.10 lists FAT16 size limits.

    Re: FAT32 file size limit

FAT32 has 4GB as its limit. The confusion about FAT file size seems to stem from the fact that FAT16 has a 4GB limit on partition size, whereas FAT32 has a 2TB limit on partition size. So you would be correct in assuming the file size is the problem here. A large number of my respondents appear to have confused "partition" with "file." To add a little additional confusion, many respondents commented that they're running large drives as one partition on FAT32.

    Re: FAT32 file size limit

The file size limitation appears to be the problem, but the maximum size depends on the operating system. FAT32 has several limitations and drawbacks compared to NTFS. This limitation would cause a problem in NLEs that run in the Windows NT kernel. The only way to format a drive larger than 32 GB with FAT 32 is formatting. For more information on FAT32 file size limit, you can check out the following link. Hope so it may help you.
