for Windows XP there is one solution that is i hav e found so there you can try

Go to Application Data folder just see C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data now here delete the file IconCache.db , Restart your computer. now after restart windows will automatically re create the IconCache.db file.

Re: Desktop icons are not displayed correctly

The reason that the icons are displayed incorrectly may be related to the use of TweakUI in conjunction with Internet Explorer 4.0. This occurs because of corruption in the Icon Cache file. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/199152

Re: Desktop icons are not displayed correctly

TweakUI .This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and more.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

Go to C:\Users\You User Name\AppData\Local, Delete the file IconCache.db
restart your computer.
