Ubuntu doesn't boot Desktop Environment

I have ubuntu 9.04 and i have not installed any updates, software or drivers since last week, but suddenly ubuntu won't load. After the loading screen, Ubuntu doesn't boot Desktop Environment. What may be the problem? This happened all of a sudden? Can anyone help...

Do you get any error after ubuntu loading? I think i don't understand what you been by booting desktop environment. What exactly happens? Can you see Grub loading? Please elaborate your problem to get a proper solution... Also does your system have any special effects softwares like beryl or Compiz? Do post back...

My computer goes into grub and i get to the ubuntu loading GUI screen. Then after the loading finishes, My system shows me a dos like black and white screen sometimes with a white cursor blinking and something nothing is shown. The deaktop environment on my system is Gnome by default and i did not try changing any settings. Yes have compiz installed and everything used to work correctly. Can anyone help??

Boot ubuntu in recovery mode and when you get to the login prompt, login with your username and password. Then try to run this command :

metacity -- replace

Now reboot and see if that helps? If that is fixed, update your system as soon as possible, Ubuntu has released a bug fix for a similar issue, might be you will get it solved too...
