When you go into System>Administration>Networking, Does it show anything other than Ethernet connection as being active? Connect your router to the computer using an Ethernet cable, if possible. Open Firefox and type in the address for your router's configuration page (usually something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, check the manual for your router).

Is this DSL or cable? Have you tried the Ubuntu network setup utility? Open System > Administration > Networking > Select the connection you wish to use, then click Properties > > Ensure Enable this connection is turned on.

Did you try a cold boot running dell m70 which on running ubuntu.Did you try to repair the connection? Did you try to shut everything down and power up again?
