MS-DOS no longer maintained by Microsoft, another DOS was developed, it is FreeDOS, a free software IBM, for its part, has a DOS 7, which can read FAT32 files and it is useful for some odd jobs.

Recent versions of Windows still have a "shell" (command prompt), whose commands are inherited from those of MS-DOS and can run Windows programs in text mode, as well as MS-DOS programs through an emulator built. However, this interpreter (cmd.exe) is not that of MS-DOS itself (command.com), and some old DOS programs can run in this mode.

MS-DOS is an operating system for Intel platforms 8086. Despite the changing possibilities of the Intel platform in the years to Protected Mode (Intel 80286) and 32 bit (Intel 80386), MS-DOS remained an operating system 16-bit real mode.

The file system is FAT (File Allocation Table) in its various versions: FAT12 (floppies only), FAT16, FAT32. Out of Windows 95 and later, file names are limited to 8 characters plus 3 for the extension, regardless of case.

From point view user MS-DOS is characterized by an interface full command line managed by the program COMMAND.COM. The user enters a command to the keyboard and possibly parameters separated by spaces, and then validate the order by the support of the Enter key.
