I'll recoomend no to use the inbuilt windows defragmetter. I'll say go for IAusLogics Disk defrag, as its work really nice.. inbuilt defrager in every windows version , no matter xp , vosta r win 7 works really slow. And as i gues for your 500 Gb HD it will take more than 2 hours..(i'm saying minimum) .

The release of Windows 7 has come with improve in Disk Defragmenter utility. I have used it, now its have various other options and doesn't work much...its worth to giva a try before going for third part applications.. With various new features added, Disk Defragmenter command-line interface, defrag.exe, has also included several new parameters or switches which can be used when running the defragmentation operation to locate and consolidate fragmented files on local volumes to improve system performance. For example,

/E – Perform the operation on all volumes except those specified.
/H – Run the operation at normal priority (default is low).
/M – Run the operation on each volume in parallel in the background.
/T – Track an operation already in progress on the specified volume.
/U – Print the progress of the operation on the screen.
/V – Print verbose output containing the fragmentation statistics.
/X – Perform free space consolidation on the specified volumes.

Although the win 7 defragger defragger has some improvements over the Vista one, it still falls short when compared to commercial defraggers. The 7 defragger is still slow, still does not show a drive map, and still does not defrag completely etc.
