| Memory use in vista when not running anything?
Hello Good morning everyone, I have a HP Pavilion dv5 -1138nr notebook with Windows vista home premium.I have been optimizing the computer by removing crap applications.I also disabled the windows side bar as well. So...when I'm not running anything and the computer is just using 1.30 GB of memory. So using less memory then that when I'm not running anything. Or What is the average memory usage you guys have been running for those of you with the same conditions as my computer, can i get it down any lower with out disturbing vista itself anymore? I have a buddy that said he got his running at supposedly 400MB.Can i do it with vista??. I am expecting nice feed back from a good techie.. thanks and peace..!! |

The thing is that in earlier versions of Windows, system responsiveness could be uneven. You may have noticed bad behavior after booting your computer, after completion of a fast user switch, your computer slows down for various reasons. While you're not using your computer, background tasks including automatic backup and anti virus software scans take this chance to run when they will least annoy you. These background tasks can take space in system memory that your applications were using. After you begin to use your computer again, it may need some time to reload your data into memory, slowing down performance. |

Attempting to get Vista down to some absolute minimum of ram use is blunder . If you have 1 gb of RAM in your computer I could see maybe trying to tweak it a bit but You have plenty of RAM and anything you unload from RAM at this point will probably slowdown. There are Vista machines working with 512 memory so I think it must be theoretically possible to get down to that 400 mb number or close to it same time this tells you will be making a lot of trips to the page file on the hard drive which will slow it down horribly. The RAM is there to be used not doled out like a miser. Optimizing for minimum RAM consumption is an old habit going back to the days of DOS when it really mattered and then somewhat even through the early XP days when 256 meg was standard issue and 512 was a luxury. |

The performance will alter from when Vista is first installed, until it settles down when its done all of its Super fetching, Indexing etc.Basically, its going to have higher system use in its first few days, until it settles down, and installing huge applications will also havoc the usage up for a little while. It is also the case that Vista allows this superfetch cache memory to be overwritten by apps if and when they need it. So nothing is lost by allowing it to do what it is supposed to do. |
