As you are new to this, i would suggest you use VirtualBox. Its GUI is very simple and easy to understand. Ok here you go :
    • Start VirtualBox and create a new Virtual Machine
    • In the Operating system section select linux and in the sub category select whichever you want to install
    • Create a new virtual hard disk
    • Select some memory [check you give appropriate memory that is required for the OS]
    • In the CD-ROM, select mount image and there load the iso image of the OS.
    • Start the Virtual Machine from the main window

There are more then 200 linux flavours, and listing all of them is not feasible. However you can either select Other Linux or RedHat or Fedora whichever is listed. CentOS is derived from RedHat Linux so this will optimize your virtual for CentOS too...
