error code 0x80070040 backup failure

I have Vista Ultimate and here is the error message that am getting during backup:

The specified network name is no longer available.
(0x80070040)

I have a system running Vista Home Premium with 2gb ram on a lan backing-up to an SBS 2008 and there are also valid free space left on the backup volume. I also found out that there are no error in the server logs. Any help will be appreciated.

I was also facing a similar error that just went away if I disabled Symantec Antivirus and Firewall before running the backup. Also you might try to clear the restoe point on the local drive which will let to do backups without any issues.

The main scene for Error Code 0x80070040 is that the Server Certificate is not present. Correspondingly, as client dials the SSTP connection, it does not get a server authentication certificate. Hence, the error.

Are you using direct backup from the production server or backup from the replica? If the issues are consistently reproable can you download the MPSRPT tool from the connect website and collect traces for the scenario when it fails?

Have you try to make backup in safe mode?

Press F8, and chose Safe mode when you want to make backup!
