After installing Norton AntiVirus on my windows xp computer Recycle Bin does not appear on the desktop. Does any one know where does recycle bin reside?
This issue occurs because Norton AntiVirus changes the name of the Recycle Bin to "Norton Protected Recycle Bin." Only the words "Norton Protected" appear below the icon on the desktop because there is not sufficient space to display the longer name.
To edit the registry to make the Recycle Bin icon reappear on the desktop, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
- Right-click the registry key that you located in step 3, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, and then press ENTER.
- Click the new {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} key that you created in step 5.
- In the right pane, double-click the (Default) entry.
- In the Edit String dialog box, type Recycle Bin in the Value data box, and then click OK.
- Close Registry Editor.
The location of recycle bin is in the subdirectory \recycler or \recycled of a drive, depending on the Windows version. The actual location of the Recycle Bin varies depending on the operating system and filesystem. On the older FAT filesystems (typically Windows 98 and prior), it is located in Drive:\RECYCLED. In the NTFS filesystem (Windows 2000, XP, NT) it can be found in Drive:\RECYCLER, with the exception of Windows Vista which stores it in the Drive:\$Recycle.Bin folder.
