Vista Windows Server 2003 Network Issue

We have a Network software running on windows server 2003. there are vista computers on the network that connect to the server through a shortcut on the desktop to the program, from workstation to server. Now....for some reason, the vista computers will work just fine for a while, and then after sitting all night long, you click the shortcut and it will bring up the server login prompt. You can still see the server on the network, and they are are still in the same workgroup, but........when you are on the workstation, and click the program shortcut on the desktop to open the software on the server.......the server login prompt comes up. If you type in the correct username and password, it just does not work. Can anyone tell me if there is an issue that I am overlooking?

    1. what is the name of the network software used?

    2. is the network program dependant on STATIC IP addresses?

if the software in question is dependant on the server having a stativ IP address, then make sure that the server's IP address is reserved and LOCKED on the DHCP table.

if the clients need to have static IPs , make sure to lock and reserve their IPs.

This can be done in any good router or Windows 2003 (if you use the server as a DHCP server as well)

Re: Vista Windows Server 2003 Network Issue

Try to ping internet from the command prompt and check whether you can see each other's workstations on the network to share files. Also, configure one of the servers as a DNS server with forwarding to the 2 external servers. The other server shall use the first one as its DNS server. That should hopefully work...

According to me this issue occurs only when “Point and Print restrictions” is not configured on your system. Try out the following steps and check out whether it works: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/Printers/Point and Print restrictions enabling the policy.
